If you’re facing hard times in finding more pupils, you’re not alone. I’ve heard from more than a few tutors who are finding things tough at the moment.

Here are some tips to help you make it through until things improve.

1) The Money Side Of Things

First off, cut back on everything EXCEPT your marketing budget.

After all, you need to get new pupils through the door. They are the ones who are going to put food on the table.

Anything you don’t need to operate or survive should be cut out.

Be strict with yourself.

Do you need to eat out tonight? Order takeaways 4-5 times a month? Do you need to buy another pair of shoes 🙂 ?

I know one tutor who has over 100 pairs!

It is essential that you step-up your marketing activities, rather than slow them down.

The tutors I coach, who are growing their businesses are not doing so because they are lucky, located in “good” areas, or because they are some kind of super teacher

They are growing because they spend 80% of their time on marketing – and they do this consistently, every single week.

Even so, you still need to make sure you’re spending your marketing dollars wisely.

So, go through your marketing expenditures with a fine-tooth comb. If any marketing method is costing you more than it’s bringing in, cancel it and focus on something that is actually giving you a good return on your investment.

Remember for every $1 you spend on marketing, as long as you break even during the same marketing period, it’s ok. A new pupil is going to come back for lessons and is potentially worth $100’s to you during the course of a year.

2) The Mental Side – Survival Strategies

Getting your finances in check is one thing, but you need to be in the right frame of mind to get through this tough period.

First off, focus on the positives – it’s the only way you’ll get through. Just keep doing that – your attitude is what will bring people into your teaching studio. If you feel really stressed all the time, try group mindfulness exercises (it helped me in the past)

People are attracted to upbeat personalities. If you’re engaging, happy and energetic, it will really make you stand out and people will be drawn to it. Remember, your energy drives your teaching business.

Finally, don’t give your students any hint that things aren’t going well for you at the moment

They’ll sense it and you’ll only be making the situation worse.

Remain focused on your students, regardless of what happens. Loyalty breeds loyalty, and you’ll be surprised at how many of them will be cheering for you and will stick with you, even if things don’t work out…
