Hi, my name’s Martyn and I’m a musician and piano teacher from London.

I’m an active performer as a solo pianist and with various bands, having played at venues throughout the UK, USA and Russia. I’ve also played with some excellent musicians over the years, including members of Jamiroquai, Manfred Mann and the winning choir from NBC’s Clash of the Choirs.

However, my main income comes from piano teaching.

I teach over 50 students a week, some in schools but mostly private lessons in my home in London.

Before building up my teaching business, I spent 2 years teaching English in Russia, and 2 years studying music at Western Michigan University in the US.

I think I’ve seen enough snow to last a lifetime!

I love sport, especially football (the English version) and unfortunately I’m a long suffering supporter of Aston Villa FC.

My team’s been going through a bad patch over the past few years. I just hope one day I can amend this ‘About’ page and write something more positive about my team!

That’s the easy explanation of what I’m all about.

Now let’s dig in…

How I created a thriving tutor business

My first attempts at promoting my piano teaching business were not good.

While I was at university, my first strategy was to try putting up some posters.

I created one in Microsoft Publisher, printed out several copies and stuck them up in university departments and local shops

Then I waited for the phone to ring…

Nothing happened.

For the next month, I didn’t get a single enquiry.

The same the month after that. Not one student!

I learnt a lot from my initial failures and over the years I’ve studied the ins and outs of marketing using both online and offline methods.

I’ve figured out the hard way what strategies are effective, and what methods are…quite frankly…a waste of time.

Why I set up this site

I set up My Tutor Business as a resource for tutors to learn how to build a successful tutoring business.

There are so many choices for undergraduates to study at universities and colleges, but in terms of learning how to earn a living as a tutor, or how to market yourself properly, you are really on your own once you graduate…

These days, tutoring is a great way to earn a full time income or to bring in some extra money each month.

But without the right marketing strategy, it can be a real struggle to find students for your business.

Over the years, I’ve learnt effective methods for promoting my piano teaching business, and these methods work for ANY tutoring business in ANY subject.

I’ve worked with Maths and English tutors, other music teachers, and I’ve helped them find more students and increase their income every month.

Feel free to look around my site and get in touch if you have questions or if you just want to say ‘Hi”.

Thanks for visiting my site!
